Description
Natalie Daise, renowned self-taught artist and storyteller from Georgetown, SC, will introduce her art to the local community in the Greens Grow in My Garden exhibition opening on April 4, 2023 in the Portman Gallery at Glynn Visual Arts (GVA).
The Greens Grow in My Garden will feature recent paintings comprised of striking oil-and-metal-leaf portraits of both family members and friends, adorned with sweetgrass-woven jewelry, traditional African-patterned clothing and bright halos, all teeming with the symbolic roots of her Gullah upbringing – collard greens and garden flowers. Much of her work explores the rich traditions of the African-American and Gullah-Geechee communities that nurture her creativity, as well as the process by which creative action shapes these communities.
“Greens represent so much to me. They are heritage and history and family gatherings. They are nourishment and strength and tales told around kitchen tables. My daddy was a gardener and there were collard greens in every yard of my childhood,” shares Natalie about where the inspiration came for her work.
Natalie Daise has more than 30 years of experience in the field of creativity. She began her career as a storyteller, traveling the country with her husband to present the history and culture of the Gullah Geechee Community. She is an artist, a singer and an actor, and a lover of community. In addition to years of participating in the creative process and facilitating educational, creative and community building experiences, she also has an M.A. in Creativity Studies.
An opening reception to launch the show will be held on Wednesday, April 5th from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. It is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
